Since 1 January 2016, the 10 members of the Association of countries of South-East Asian Nations join forces in economic integration coming, economic ASEAN Community (AEC). Although the new community aims to facilitate the flow of investment and capital, many Indonesians are worried about their chances to compete with an influx of foreign workers.

In response to growing concerns of the local workforce, Manpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri said the AEC will bring benefits and challenges for its members. He predicted that the number of foreign workers in Indonesia will not exceed 70 thousand a year.

But the minister assures the public that foreign workers are not allowed to work in some areas, leaving many more opportunities for locals.

"My prediction is that there will be no significant growth because the ACS should not be confused with anyone, ACS applies only eight professions," says Dhariki.

These eight professions open to foreign workers include consultants, surveyors, dentists, doctors, accountants and other professions requiring special skills. the local workforce, on the other hand, will excel in the industry tourism according Dhakiri.

Dhariki encourages local labor force to remain positive for the change and work on strategies for improvement. "the first need is to stay optimistic, next to what measures will be taken to achieve better results, "he said.

In addition, the Minister expects the local workforce to improve competitiveness in order to continue creating work opportunities and expand the market of Indonesia in ASEAN.
