2015 was crucial for Indonesia in many ways, and it is important to review the 12 months that have passed. We have taken the liberty of compiling a list of key events that are likely to shape the corporate culture of Indonesia, the macro-economy and the political landscape in the future in 2016.

Transport Ministry suspends AirAsia Indonesia

Following the disappearance and death of 162 passengers onboard AirAsia flight QZ8501 from Surabaya to Singapore Sunday, December 28, 2014, the Minister of Transport Ignasius Jonan of the suspended temporarily nation Surabaya to Singapore route of the airline.

in January, the Minister of Labour made a controversial statement, saying aliens are required to pass a local language exam if they sought employment in Indonesia.

The idea has raised the eyebrows of foreign and local companies, it would certainly make it more difficult for foreigners to obtain a work permit. Ultimately, the language examinations were considered an unnecessary burden.

Labour Union deplores the ASEAN economic Community

On 1 May, the Federation of Indonesian Labour made several requests of the government. Federation President Widodo Santoso said the list of demands was a wake up call for the government to take action against industries that marginalize workers.

In addition to a great political noise, the Federation asked the government to withdraw its commitment to the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). The AEC will allow the free movement of people, goods and services throughout the region for a   GDP of US $ 2.5 billion and trade companies worth US $ 1 trillion.

Some workers see the participation of Indonesia in the AEC as a bad thing because it would theoretically increase competition for jobs in the archipelago.

Airports near volcanoes erupt

International Juanda Surabaya and two airports closed after two volcanoes blasted ash and debris into the air. The closures came as millions of Muslims were returning home to celebrate the end of Ramadan.

The previous week, travelers were also blocked when the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali closed due to the eruption of Mount Raung, one of the most active volcanoes on Java. Four other airports in the region were also closed, leaving thousands of tourists stranded. The financial losses were reported at several billion rupees.

The precautionary closure came during a period of sensitivity and increased agitation for the aviation industry in Indonesia.

Widodo reshuffles Cabinet
