Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia, approved a regulation that prohibits the production, consumption and distribution of alcohol beverages, such Governor of the town Sort Rismaharini previously approved the ban.
Mayor bases its decision to ban alcohol on the recent cases of juvenile delinquency, which involved the gang rape and murder of a student of 14 years in Sumatra last month by a group teens allegedly intoxicated.
Similarly, the Papuan government has decided to ban alcoholic beverages in the region in March due to multiple crimes that led to deaths and injuries.
Concerned about the damage that alcohol can bring, in 2015 Tri Rismaharini refused the distribution of alcoholic beverages in convenience stores or supermarkets and is now planning to publish this new regulation:
" in the near future, I'll issue a mayor of Regulation prohibit alcoholic beverages in Surabaya, "said Rismaharini as reported by the Jakarta post.
The Regulation covers all types of drinks, including traditional and mixed, which contain more than 10 percent alcohol.
The punishment for those who violate the rules will include the warning issued letters of administrative fines, temporary closure of the business, the business license revocation and business closure . Offenders will also face three months of jail time or a fine of Rp.50 million.
President Surabaya Legislative Council Armuji said that Surabaya officials have already consulted the settlement with the Ministry of the Interior to ensure that it remains consistent with other regulations:
" If, within three months [Governor] Soekarwo does not respond to this regulation, it would be passed directly to Surabaya. The regulation does not contradict a [ sic ] regulations because we consulted the Ministry of Interior. "
