for about the last 15 years, I have not listened to the radio. Specifically, I have not even belonging a radio to listen to (except my car that I use as it has only local stations). But that all changed a few months ago when I got the TuneIn radio for my iPhone (and it is available on Android and BlackBerry, and almost all other smartphones on the market.) Although there is no shortage of radio applications on the App Store, good and cheap ones with a lot of choice of the resort are a little harder to find than most. That's where TuneIn Radio comes in. TuneIn provides a solid support for RadioTime presets and the DVR-style controls for rewinding and recording songs and favorite shows.

The basic interface for TuneIn Radio looks a lot like iTunes, but it's not a bad thing. The display shows the main headings for radio stations - stations based on location, music, talk and sports. Choosing one of these opens submenus, and each of them opens a submenu, and so on and so on until you find a station you prefer. The stations are imported from Radiotime online service, so there are literally thousands to choose from. Because the device uses GPS, it even provides a category of "local stations" for those looking for something local. For the rest of us, you have immediate access to the entire world of online radio handy.

What really sets TuneIn apart from its competitors, however, is its use of DVR recording style / rewind / fast forward functions. At any time during a listening session, all you have to do is click on the record button and record you as you stay on this resort (it will even roll back and save the bit you listened before clicking the recording). Better yet, you can set a timer on your iPad or iPhone (TuneIn is, thankfully, a universal application) to begin recording when and what you want. Have a favorite daily program? No problem. Just set the timer and listen at your convenience. Background tasks means that you will have to keep the program open for it to work either.

The records are all stored, naturally enough, under "Recordings" side of the header, but is in it a small problem. There is no way to export your recordings or record them on anything other than TuneIn. This looks like a bigger problem with Apple with the developer of the application, but it would certainly be nice to export your recorded programs on iTunes or similar programs.

TuneIn handles streaming audio (and audio recording) fine. Given its low price of $ 0.99, and the fact that it is a universal application, it is a good choice for those seeking a radio app to their iPad, iPhone or other smart device with a good data connection. Although I still use the radio in my car, this application has opened a whole new world of discovery of music and talk radio in a way I never thought possible.
